Huntsville-Madison County Named Host Community for Statewide College Intern Program

The Economic Development Partnership of Alabama has selected 10 host communities, including the Huntsville area, for this summer's FuelAL program aimed at connecting college students with Alabama careers.

The Huntsville-Madison County area is one of 10 host communities chosen for a summer college internship program run by the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama (EDPA), the organization announced.

The program, known as Fuel Alabama or FuelAL, is a talent attraction and retention effort carried out by EDPA in partnership with Innovate Alabama. It is designed to help college students build professional and community connections across the state, and it is expanding this year to include both new and returning communities.

During the summer, interns taking part in FuelAL will have access to professional development, mentorship, community engagement and networking opportunities. By placing students in local industries and cultural experiences, the program aims to present Alabama as an appealing place to start a career and put down roots.

Estes Hughes, EDPA's vice president of Innovation & Talent, described the effort as an economic investment. "Put simply, FuelAL is an investment in Alabama's economic future," Hughes said. He added that by linking students with industries, communities and career opportunities, the program helps them see Alabama as a place to build their lives.

Hughes said the program has reached nearly 900 students since it began, and organizers plan to pass the 1,000 mark this summer.

He also said FuelAL supports key industries such as mobility, defense, life sciences and IT, while strengthening local businesses and communities. "With continued collaboration, we can sustain this momentum and make Alabama a top destination for top talent," Hughes said.

Besides the Huntsville-Madison County area, the host communities are Auburn, Bibb County, Calhoun County, Dothan, Greater Birmingham, Mobile, Opelika, the River Region and Tuscaloosa.

In addition to the programming held within those communities, EDPA will organize two statewide FuelAL Summits this summer. The first is scheduled for June 13-15 and the second for July 18-19. Both will gather students from around Alabama for professional development and networking.
