Guilford County Planners Invite Residents to Weigh In on Comprehensive Plan at Series of Workshops

County planning officials are holding five in-person sessions and one Zoom meeting this month to gather public input on the update to the Comprehensive Plan.

Guilford County residents have a chance to help shape how the unincorporated parts of the county grow, as the Planning and Development Department prepares a series of public workshops on its update of the Comprehensive Plan.

The plan is meant to serve as a guide for years to come on zoning, growth and related matters outside municipal limits. Members of the Planning Board and Planning Department staff will use it as a map to help ensure development happens "in a manner that aligns with the community's vision for both the built and natural environments over the next 10-20 years."

Because that vision depends on what residents want, planning officials say they need to hear from the public. They are reminding people about the upcoming workshops and encouraging residents to attend one. The meetings are essentially identical, so residents can choose whichever location and time suits them. Attendees will hear what planners are thinking, and officials say they will be open to suggestions.

The first workshop is Monday, Sept. 18, at Alamance Presbyterian Church, 4000 Presbyterian Road in Greensboro, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The next is Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Frazier Elementary School, 4215 Galway Drive in Greensboro, with the same 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. hours.

On Wednesday, Sept. 20, two sessions will run at the same time, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. One will be at the Northeast Park Events Center, 4010 High Rock Road in Gibsonville. The other will be at the Bryan Park Meetings and Events Center, 6275 Bryan Park Road in Brown Summit.

A further session is listed for Nathanael Greene Elementary School, 2717 NC 62 in Liberty, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The announcement gives its date as Wednesday, Sept. 30. Because Sept. 30 does not fall on a Wednesday this year, residents may want to confirm that date with the Planning Department before attending.

For those who would rather participate from home, a virtual meeting will be held on Zoom on Thursday, Sept. 28, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Residents who want to join by smartphone, tablet or computer should contact the Guilford County Planning Department for details on how to take part.

Residents who want background on the county's current planning framework can also find resources online. Existing plans and past updates are available on Guilford County's website.
