Moonshot AI has officially launched Kimi K3.1 Pro, a significant upgrade to its previous reasoning model that immediately challenged the dominance of Western competitors. By leveraging substantially increased post-training compute, the new system has surged up the global rankings, positioning itself as a serious contender in the enterprise AI market.

The model currently sits at number four on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index with a score of 55. This represents an 11-point improvement over its predecessor, Kimi K3. It trails only three proprietary systems: Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5, and Muse Wonder Full. If Moonshot adheres to its timeline for releasing model weights by November 4, 2026, K3.1 Pro would become the highest-scoring open-weights model available. This move would reduce the performance gap between open and proprietary models from 12 points to just three, assuming no other major releases occur in the interim.

Performance gains are most evident in agentic tasks and coding. On the GDPval-AA benchmark, K3.1 Pro achieves an Elo rating of 1,846, surpassing its predecessor by 312 points. It narrowly trails Claude Opus 5.5 and Muse Wonder Full in this category. In terminal-based coding tests, the model scores 65.7 percent, outpacing GPT-6 Astra and closely following Claude Opus 5.5. Hallucination rates have also dropped significantly, with claim-level errors falling from 23.4 percent to 8.3 percent on Moonshot's internal stress tests, though GPT-6 Astra maintains a slight edge at 5.5 percent.

The model demonstrates strong capabilities in 3D modeling, working directly with game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine. On the BenchCAD benchmark, it scores 92.7 percent when using tools, approaching the performance of top-tier proprietary models. Moonshot also introduced a "3D Make" feature on its platform, allowing users to preview and export 3D designs. The system excels at parametric modeling of mechanical and architectural parts, capable of writing scripts for Blender and CAD software without external connectors.

Despite the performance boost, the underlying architecture remains unchanged, retaining 2.8 trillion total parameters and a one-million-token context window. However, Moonshot has reduced API prices by 33 percent. Input costs now stand at $2 per million tokens, while output costs are $10. This pricing strategy places the model at the top of the Pareto frontier for its size class, offering high intelligence at a lower cost per task compared to its predecessor.

Security considerations played a key role in the model's development. Moonshot observed that vulnerability research capabilities grew as post-training scaled, prompting the company to strip cyber-related data from the training corpus for the open-weights release. This decision reduced the model's score on internal cybersecurity benchmarks from 90.5 percent to 81.0 percent. The company aims to balance offensive potential with defensive utility, ensuring open models can audit legacy systems without pushing the absolute frontier of cyber capabilities.

K3.1 Pro is available now through Kimi.ai, Kimi Work, and the Kimi API. A variant called K3.1 Pro Highspeed is also offered, which runs two to three times faster. These releases mark a pivotal moment for open-source AI, as the gap between free and paid proprietary models continues to shrink rapidly.
