Chapel Hill police will treat Saturday night like a standard home football game, deploying full traffic support for the UNC match against Miami without closing any streets. The event coincides with the city's Halloween celebrations, creating a dual pressure on local infrastructure.
The Chapel Hill Police Department stated that UNC officers and state troopers will assist with traffic flow in and out of the stadium. No roads will be shut down for the duration of the event.
Lieutenant Jason Belcher of the Community Services Department said the department prioritizes safety for both pedestrians and drivers. "We’re treating this like any other Halloween, obviously safety is a priority. We want to make sure that trick-or-treaters that are out there- kids with adults, stay safe. And make sure that everybody has a good time," Belcher said.
Police issued specific guidance for residents and visitors. Officers urged people wearing costumes to choose reflective or bright-colored items and to use marked crosswalks. Drivers were warned to remain vigilant for pedestrians throughout the night. The department also reinforced messages about responsible drinking and the use of rideshare services.
Crowds dressed in costume and Carolina Blue took to the streets ahead of the kickoff. The Tar Heels and Hurricanes are scheduled to begin play at 7:30 p.m. at Kenan Stadium. WRAL crews will be present on Franklin Street to monitor conditions during the game.
