The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested 42-year-old Ian Brinksman on Friday after charging him with leaking Top Secret intelligence to a media outlet.

Brinksman worked for a US government agency in Virginia starting in 2020. He joined a contractor for that agency in 2022 and held Top Secret clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed in a statement that Brinksman provided services to the agency as a contractor.

The Department of Justice alleges that Brinksman shared information from at least five Top Secret intelligence reports with a person identified as Individual 1. The complaint states this material could cause exceptionally grave damage to national security if leaked.

None of the reports fell within the scope of Brinksman’s daily work. He accessed specific reports on his way in or out of his workplace, which forbids personal electronics.

An affidavit includes an email where Brinksman told a friend he was helping a female journalist get her Substack publication off the ground. He noted her focus was on foreign policy.

Individual 1 allegedly posted Substack articles containing the classified information shortly after speaking with Brinksman by phone.

The Department of Justice and the FBI have not publicly named Individual 1. However, The Jerusalem Post analyzed the affidavit details and found they align with American journalist Aida Chavez and her publication Capital & Empire.

Reports from Ynet and the New York Post also connected Chavez to the case. She has not been charged with any offenses or officially linked to the investigation.

Chavez’s articles on the dates cited in the affidavit cite sources described as a confidential US intelligence assessment and a classified CIA analysis.

Many of the alleged leaks discussed Israel, US-Israel relations, and the ongoing war with Iran.
