Three tankers loaded with Russian diesel are currently en route to the North American coast, marking the first concrete step in a new energy deal.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak confirmed on Friday that these vessels are part of a broader arrangement. Under this agreement, Russian companies will supply 500,000 metric tonnes of fuel to markets in the United States and globally during October. Novak stated that the first three fuel tankers are already traveling toward the eastern Atlantic coast with significant support from the Russian Direct Investment Fund. The deal was announced earlier this month by US President Donald Trump. Its terms require Russia to supply diesel to help lower global fuel prices, while Washington temporarily lifts sanctions on Russian fuel.
Reuters reported that one of the ships, the Malta-flagged medium-sized tanker Agioi Fanendes, is carrying ultra-low sulphur diesel. The vessel is expected to arrive in the United States on 7 November. This shipment serves as a practical test of the diplomatic thaw between the two nations.
In parallel developments, the White House announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a ceasefire in the city of Oleshky. This Russian-occupied area in southern Ukraine has faced a worsening humanitarian crisis since February 2022. Both sides will halt military operations from 27 October. This pause allows for the delivery of aid and the preparation of civilian evacuations. Officials from both countries indicated that they are close to finalizing the terms of the truce.
The situation in Oleshky remains critical for the estimated 2,000 residents who remain. They face severe shortages of food, water, and electricity. Some inhabitants have reportedly survived on weeds, boiled grass, and limited rations. The ceasefire aims to alleviate these desperate conditions by opening a window for humanitarian support.
The United States is now working to organize fresh talks aimed at ending the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Friday that negotiators from Ukraine, Russia, and the US have agreed to hold technical-level meetings in the first half of November in Abu Dhabi. A US official later suggested that the three countries might meet again in a couple of weeks, possibly in Switzerland. Zelenskyy expressed hope that a meeting of the leaders would follow these technical discussions.
This diplomatic push follows recent tensions between Washington and Kyiv. These included limits placed on the Starlink communication system used by Ukraine. President Trump said on Friday that if Ukraine still had trouble accessing the system, he would resolve the issue, potentially raising it with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Meanwhile, EU leaders in Brussels pressed UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham to increase contributions to Ukraine’s defense. The International Atomic Energy Agency also reported that repairs to power infrastructure near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant were completed under a temporary ceasefire, lowering the risk of another power loss at Europe’s largest nuclear station.
