Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger announced on Monday that a local couple has been charged with multiple felonies after an extensive investigation into their home in Evans. The department described the residence as a "house of horrors" where three children endured years of alleged mistreatment. Erica Lynn Sayre, 45, and Clifford Gale Sayre, 46, now stand accused of neglect and abuse that left the children with physical and emotional scars.

Each parent faces six felony charges. Erica Sayre is charged with three counts of child neglect creating a risk of injury and three counts of child abuse resulting in bodily injury. Clifford Sayre faces three counts of child neglect creating a risk of injury and three counts of child neglect resulting in bodily injury. The specific allegations paint a grim picture of daily life inside the family home. Authorities claim the children were repeatedly struck and strangled. They were also deprived of food and water and denied access to the bathroom for extended periods.

Investigators detailed specific punishments used by the couple. Soiled cat litter was dumped in the children's beds, and dog feces was placed on their personal belongings. The children were forced to run barefoot on a gravel driveway as a form of discipline. Other alleged acts of abuse include being struck with household objects, forced to hold a soiled sock in their mouths, and having their hair forcibly cut. One child described being hit in the head with an electronic device, causing a bleeding injury that went untreated. Another child was threatened with death if she contacted Child Protective Services.

The role of the father was a central focus of the inquiry. Investigators alleged that Clifford Sayre witnessed repeated instances of abuse but failed to intervene. One child claimed he held her hands down while Erica Sayre cut her hair with a razor blade, causing an injury. During a forensic interview, the children stated, "Because mom hits us and Gale lets her." The sheriff's office noted that the children's statements corroborated one another and aligned with physical evidence collected during the investigation.

Medical examinations revealed scars consistent with the children's accounts. Investigators worked closely with Child Protective Services and a local Child Advocacy Center to document the injuries. Photographic evidence and multiple interviews formed the basis of the case. All three children were removed from the home once the allegations were disclosed. During interviews, one child became emotional and told investigators, "I can't go back to that home." Another expressed a desire for a normal life.

"The outlined findings of the investigation are deeply troubling and underscore the importance of reporting suspected child abuse," Sheriff Mellinger said. He added that the children were living with adults who should have protected them from such conditions. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department emphasized its commitment to investigating reports involving vulnerable children thoroughly and efficiently.
