Federal agents have taken a 17-year-old into custody in McKinney, Texas, following allegations that the youth plotted to assassinate North Texas Congressman Keith Self. The representative, who is currently vying for a third term in office, confirmed the development alongside his campaign officials. Details regarding the teenager's identity remain undisclosed as the investigation proceeds.

The timeline of events began on Oct. 5, when the FBI executed the arrest. The congressman’s team was notified of the situation the following day, Oct. 6, via the U.S. Capitol Police. Investigators indicated the teenager had been radicalized and monitored by federal agents, allegedly planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS. The intended target was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for Oct. 17, an event featuring former Cowboys players and high-profile guests. The FBI Dallas office has not yet responded to requests for further information.

Upon learning of the threat, Rep. Self stated his team immediately escalated their security protocols. While noting that he already possessed 'plenty of security,' the congressman confirmed his team altered their 'situational awareness' to ensure safety. Self attributed his composed reaction to his military background, stating he had deployed into combat zones several times. 'Having deployed into combat zones several times, I'm happy it happened to me because people that have never dealt with this before tend to freak out when somebody tells you that somebody's trying to kill you,' Self said. He emphasized the need to determine if the individual was a 'lone wolf' or part of a broader network.

Despite the gravity of the alleged plot, Self proceeded with his scheduled commitments without interruption. He attended the fundraiser as planned, joking that he 'judged 19 different chilies and three different pots of beans' during the event. The congressman has continued his campaign efforts, including poll greeting and meeting voters daily. He stated he will not be deterred from his mission to alert the American people regarding what he views as political ideology issues. His wife, a military spouse for 25 years, is also taking the threat seriously.

The arrest unfolds against a backdrop of political tension regarding Self's stances. In September, the congressman introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution opposing the implementation of Sharia law in the United States. His district, which encompasses McKinney, has recently seen heated debates over a new mosque expansion approved by the city council in August. Self’s opponent in the midterm race, Evan Hunt, has publicly condemned the alleged assassination plot via social media.
