Helen Haines is no longer in critical condition. The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne announced the change in status on Saturday morning. This is the first improvement in her health since the incident on Monday.

Haines, 65, was hit by a car outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, north-east Victoria. Police say the strike was deliberate. She required amputation of both legs.

Brendan Nugent, 43, was arrested shortly after the collision. He faces three charges in court. These include dangerous driving causing serious injury and intentionally causing serious injury. A third charge alleges he caused harm to a Commonwealth public official.

Police indicated that further charges are possible. Attempted murder is among the possibilities. Nugent's lawyer told the court his client has mental health concerns. No specific details were provided at that time.

Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police are continuing their investigation. They have not established a motive. Investigators are examining if drug use or medication played a role. Nugent's family stated they were long-time friends of Haines.

Haines' husband, Phil Haines, spoke on Wednesday about the incident. He described it as horrendous but said her heart and mind were in good shape. Haines has served in parliament since 2019. She is an independent member and a former nurse and midwife.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commented on the event shortly after the attack. He told ABC television that Australia has seen a rise in temperature. He noted there has been too much shouting and not enough discourse.

Haines is known for supporting stronger climate action. She entered parliament after a career in nursing and midwifery. The hospital update marks a shift in her recovery timeline after five days of critical care.
