A 36-year-old woman from Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, died in Bimini after a strong current pulled her into the water while she tried to reach her two sons.
Police said the family was snorkeling near the southern point of the island on Tuesday. The current quickly separated the boys from the group. The mother swam toward them but was also caught in the flow.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Staff there had already moved her to the local clinic. A doctor pronounced her dead at the facility despite resuscitation efforts.
The Royal Bahamas Force stated that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after she was pulled from the water. Both sons were successfully recovered from the sea. The husband remained at the scene with the children.
Investigators have opened a case into the sudden death. Foul play is not suspected at this stage. An autopsy will take place to determine the specific cause of death.
A Foreign Office spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and are assisting the family. The department expressed its thoughts for the mother's relatives.
