Nearly 1,000 pounds of magnesium dissolve into skin-temperature water to create a solution dense enough that the human body cannot sink. This mixture forms the basis of float therapy, a practice that studies link to improved sleep and reduced pain.

Dana Highfill has worked as a massage therapist for 17 years. She currently operates Float North in Northeast Portland. Her tanks measure eight feet long, four feet wide, and seven feet high. The water inside holds approximately 10 inches of depth. Highfill notes that this space is larger than many clients expect.

During a session, users lie in the tub for an hour or more. They can turn off all lights and block out sound. Highfill explains that the high density of the water removes physical pressure. Joints open up, which helps reduce inflammation. She states that the environment reduces stimulation to the nervous system, shifting users from a fight or flight state to a rest and repair state.

Nia Linbravo uses the therapy to manage a diagnosis of depression and anxiety. She referees women’s basketball games four to five nights a week. She also holds a job in project management and previously worked as a juvenile probation officer. The physical and mental demands of her schedule made it difficult to slow down.

Linbravo said, “It was hard to relax.” A herniated disk and trouble sleeping led her to try the treatment. She consulted her doctor about different strategies for managing her health. Her doctor said the therapy would be helpful. Linbravo added, “I think it’s the weightlessness and the feeling of the water supporting me, and I’m literally just letting go.” She described the tank as a space to talk to herself, reflect on daily life, and calm her mind.

Most of Highfill’s clients seek relief from physical or mental stress. She observes that the experience allows people to turn off gravity while lying fully supported. The practice offers a structured break from the daily demands of work and life.

Linbravo continues to use the service as part of her health routine. Highfill maintains the tanks to ensure the magnesium concentration remains high enough to support the body’s weight during each visit.
