A 22-year-old former student was arrested in late September after arriving at Trimble County Junior-Senior High School in Bedford, Kentucky, armed with a gun and under the influence.

School secretary Lake noticed the man as he pulled into the parking line near her vehicle. The two cars nearly collided as he entered the lot while she pulled out. Lake saw the firearm in his car during the close pass.

Police said the man had been released from jail in 2025 on a $50,000 bond following his arrest for possession and distribution of child sex abuse material. He showed up at the school on the day of the incident.

Lake immediately called police, who arrived at the scene within three minutes. While the armed man remained inside the front of the building, Lake stayed on the phone with 911 operators.

Trimble County Schools Superintendent Todd Neace said Lake moved through the school grounds to verify that no students were outside. He stated that she swept the area before heading to a nearby dollar store. She also checked the back of the high school to ensure the perimeter was clear.

“I was never truly concerned for myself,” Lake said. “I was concerned for the people that I had just left in the lobby.”

School board members, parents, and students recognized Lake on Tuesday night. Neace told her, “Thank you for your courage, bravery, support and everything you do for the students at Trimble County Junior-Senior High School.” An award will now be displayed at her desk.
