Apple has placed a functional virtual iPod on its Apple Music error pages to mark 25 years since the original device was unveiled. The interactive replica appears beneath the standard page not found message and invites users to give the device a spin instead of returning to the site.

The virtual player mirrors the interface of the original hardware from 2001. It features the classic click wheel and menu sections for Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Settings. Users can navigate these menus to browse a library containing exactly 1,029 playable tracks.

The music selection leans heavily toward popular hits from the early 2000s. The source article notes the presence of Baha Men, blink-182, and Eminem. A UK-based writer for Engadget also identified Daniel Bedingfield, The Fratellis, and Klaxons in the library. It is unclear if these specific regional artists appear for listeners in other countries.

Engadget reports that the experience is somewhat buggy on desktop computers, where the writer had trouble getting the tool to load. The outlet suggests using a phone or tablet, where touch controls better replicate the physical feel of the original click wheel. Each song plays for a maximum of 90 seconds.

A second hidden feature references a game called Brick, which was an easter egg on the first iPod. Notebook Check found that users can access this Breakout-style game by holding the center button on the About screen for several seconds. This interaction method is identical to the process used on the 2001 hardware.

The virtual iPod does not appear to require an active Apple Music subscription. Engadget stated it was unsure why Apple invested development effort into a feature visible only to users who encounter broken links. The company did not issue a statement explaining the decision.

The original iPod was marketed with the claim that it held 1,000 songs in the user's pocket. The new web element references that specific marketing point by including a library of slightly more than that number. The device remains a key reference point for Apple's history in consumer electronics.
