Police arrested a suspect on Monday afternoon following an attempted kidnapping at the Kainalu condominiums on Coconut Avenue in Honolulu. Authorities responded to the complex around noon after residents reported the incident. Surveillance footage captured a truck parked outside the complex before the suspect entered the garage area.
Video recorded by the building showed the man confronting two women inside the garage. He then chased one of them, a 24-year-old resident. A 77-year-old woman living in the complex stated that the suspect elbowed her in the face before lifting her friend into his arms. “He shoved me away from my friend and he picked her up,” the 77-year-old resident said. She described the suspect’s expression as intense, noting he appeared to have hatred and craziness in his eyes.
Neighbors heard the commotion and rushed to the scene. Beverly Louis, a witness, observed the man bear-hugging the 24-year-old while he dragged her toward the rear of his truck. “I just started screaming, ‘Drop her! Drop her! Drop her!’” Louis said. She noted that the victim was screaming for her life and appeared terrified during the struggle. Another resident, Mike Finkelstein, also shouted at the man, telling him he had called police and would follow him.
Several neighbors stepped in to assist the 24-year-old, helping her break free from the suspect’s grip. The man retreated to his truck and drove away. Police located the suspect a few hours later in a nearby neighborhood. Officers said they found him running naked, matching the description provided by witnesses.
The 77-year-old resident expressed gratitude to her neighbors for their assistance during the event. She and the 24-year-old victim reported experiencing nightmares in the days following the incident. The neighborhood remained tense as residents processed the events of Monday afternoon. The suspect was taken into custody, ending the search for the man who had confronted the women in the garage.
