Tim Williams of Corinth, Mississippi, lost $620 to a fraudulent life insurance claim shortly after the death of his sister, Stephanie Jeanine Williams Machado. The incident occurred while Williams was managing funeral arrangements for his late relative.
A woman called Williams and identified herself as his sister's life insurance agent. She provided specific account and policy numbers, then requested $1,375 to release a payment to the Corinthian Funeral Home. Williams joined a three-way phone call with the woman and the funeral home, a step he noted made the interaction appear legitimate at the time.
Williams had only $620 available and sent that amount as the woman instructed. She told him to send the funds however was easiest, suggesting either a visit to the insurance office or a transfer via Cash App. Williams sent the money to his nephew, who then forwarded it through the application.
The funeral home later informed Williams that it had not received the payment. When he traced the phone number provided by the caller, he found it belonged to a man in Alabama. The number did not match the name on the Cash App account or the woman who had spoken to him.
"When you're already in a bad time in your life .. losing your loved one. Then for somebody to do this on top of that takes a pretty low individual to go to that extent," Williams said. He advised anyone who has recently lost a loved one to double-check and triple-check that all financial details are real.
The source article does not state when the call occurred or provide a specific date for the sister's death. Williams has not indicated whether he has filed a formal police report or contacted a consumer protection agency.
