Louisville men's basketball players will take the court for their first regular season game on November 2. The Cardinals begin the 2026-27 campaign ranked No. 11 in the AP Poll. They will host Chattanooga at the KFC YUM! Center to open the year. The team enters this season with a roster that has undergone major changes through the transfer portal.
The backcourt now features Jackson Shelstead from Oregon and Seth Trimble from North Carolina. Both players arrived via the transfer portal. Shelstead was a former All-Big Ten third-team member. Trimble brings scoring and perimeter defense to the group. Issac Ellis, a star from the Overtime Elite league, also joined the roster. He reclassified from a 2027 commit to play this year.
Adrian Wooley is the only player returning from last season. He will enter his junior year after the departures of leading scorers Mikel Brown Jr. and Ryan Conwell to the NBA. London Johnson, who played alongside Wooley last year, was reportedly dismissed from the team in August. Wooley is expected to assume a larger role in the offense with the new guard group.
The wing position received four new players. Karter Knox, a former McDonald's All-American, joined from the transfer portal. De'Shayne Montgomery came from Dayton. Alvaro Folgueiras, the 2025 Horizon League Player of the Year, also signed with the program. Boyuan Zhang, a four-star recruit from China, committed to the team as well.
The center position includes top-rated transfer Flory Bidunga and five-star Obinna Ekezie Jr. Ekezie also reclassified to play this season. Gabe Dynes, a seven-foot-five Kentucky native, joined the squad but will likely miss the entire season due to an injury. The team shifted its focus from an offensive style to a defensive one during the offseason. Head coach Pat Kelsey has been praised for addressing last year's weaknesses by making the team tougher and more versatile.
Legal issues complicated the offseason for two key players. A federal court ruling allowed players from the class of 2022 with exhausted eligibility to receive a fifth year. Louisville benefited from this decision by securing Trimble and LJ Wells. However, their eligibility status fluctuated due to changing rulings and a previous restraining order that was later shut down. A recent injunction currently grants them eligibility ahead of the season start. The NCAA has appealed this injunction, and the lawsuit remains ongoing.
The Cardinals won all three of their exhibition games. Their opponents included Bahamas Raw Talent, No. 17 Kansas, and Mercyhurst. The non-conference schedule features several high-profile matchups. The team will travel to Memphis on November 15. They will face No. 19 Texas Tech in the Player's Era Classic starting November 24. Louisville will host No. 7 Texas on December 1 as part of the ACC-SEC Challenge.
The team will play Michigan on a neutral site on December 5. They will then travel to Rupp Arena to face No. 23 Kentucky on December 12. This schedule reflects the program's continued willingness to play top competition. The Cardinals aim to make a deep run into March after an up-and-down previous season.
