Owners of the new iPhone Duo face a reduced viewing area on the device's outer display. Apple has implemented a fixed sidebar on the right side of the 5.4-inch cover screen. This design choice consumes roughly 15 percent of the total display area. The space is reserved for the dock, leaving less room for active content.
The reduction in usable space creates a visible difference when compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The Fold 8 features a taller and narrower physical profile. Its cover screen does not suffer from the same layout restrictions. Users who rely on navigation gestures on the Samsung device report minimal wasted screen real estate. The iPhone Duo layout, however, forces the interface to shrink the available space.
Allison Johnson of The Verge noted that the iPhone Duo feels harder to operate with one hand than the Galaxy Z Fold 8. She attributed this to the physical dimensions and software layout. The Verge’s video review showed the Galaxy Z Fold 8 using a navigation bar, which softened the visual contrast. For users who prefer gestures, the Fold 8 utilizes nearly the entire outer screen for main content.
Apple aims to use the sidebar as a space-saving tool on the small display. The strategy stretches media to appear taller, mimicking the aspect ratio of a standard slab smartphone. This approach differs from the method employed by Samsung. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 leaves the outer display free for primary content, a layout that has proven effective for many users.
The iPhone Duo is currently available to consumers, though initial stock is limited. The device represents Apple’s first entry into the wide foldable market. Critics point to this software implementation as a primary limitation. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 continues to gain traction despite early challenges with Android on foldable hardware. The contrast in cover screen usability highlights the distinct approaches the two companies have taken to the same form factor.
