Miami retained the No. 1 seed in the AP Top 25 College Football Rankings released on Sunday, holding its position despite a relatively quiet Halloween weekend. Georgia climbed to No. 2, displacing a team that had previously held that spot. Utah sits at No. 3, followed by Notre Dame at No. 4.
The specific order of the top four teams carries direct weight for the postseason. These four programs will receive first-round byes in the College Football Playoffs. The remaining slots in the tournament are determined by conference performance and at-large selections. Five conference champions from the Power Four and one from the Group of Six are guaranteed spots.
Notre Dame faces a specific threshold for its independent status. The Fighting Irish will secure an at-large bid if they remain in the top 12 of the CFP’s final rankings on Dec. 6. Other at-large selections will be filled by the next-highest-ranked teams. This structure allows multiple teams from the same conference to advance.
The Southeastern Conference would currently have the largest representation on the bracket with four teams. The Big Ten would follow with three spots, while the Big 12 holds two. The Atlantic Coast Conference and the Pac-12 would each have one team in the mix. Boise State is positioned to represent the Pac-12 as the top Group of Six champion.
