Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy returned to the field for the No. 23 Tigers on Saturday night, nearly six months after being shot in the leg. He entered the game late in the first quarter against Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to applause from the home crowd. Hardy finished the 34-10 victory with two carries for a total of 5 yards.
Hardy was attending a concert in Laurel, Mississippi, on May 10 when he was wounded as a bystander. Police arrested a suspect and charged them with two felony counts of aggravated assault. Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz stated this week that the 20-year-old athlete required surgery to insert a metal rod in his femur. Few public details have been released regarding the full extent of his injuries.
In 2025, Hardy ran for 1,649 yards and set a school record with 16 touchdowns. His absence left a gap in the offensive lineup that Jamal Roberts helped fill. Roberts, the team's leading rusher entering the weekend, recorded 138 yards and a touchdown against the Razorbacks. He noted that Hardy maintained a positive demeanor during his return.
Hardy described the physical sensation of taking game contact as familiar. He said, “It felt the same. My body is fully healed, so it’s nothing different.” He credited the support system around him, adding, “Everybody has been there every day (supporting), literally from coaches to staff to the players. Everybody has been real supportive and I’m taking heed to that.”
The running back acknowledged that being off the field caused his mind to wander at times. He cited reading his Bible and staying close to teammates as ways to stay focused. “Me, mentally, I’m a very strong mental person,” Hardy said. “Whatever I put my mind to, I can do it. If the good Lord said I can do it then I can do it.”
Drinkwitz praised Hardy in his post-game remarks. “I want to say I’m really, really proud of Ahmad Hardy,” the coach said. “It’s been a long road to get back here. It’s been a very difficult challenge for everybody.. To be able to come in here and get us a big first down, I’m really proud of him.”
Hardy's return concludes a long recovery period that began in May. He joined the lineup for the Tigers' most recent game, contributing to a dominant defensive and offensive performance against the Razorbacks.
