Senegalese police detained Amadou Sarang Diallo on Friday, roughly 88 kilometers from the capital city of Dakar. The 27-year-old civil society organizer was taken into custody following a video he posted to TikTok. In the clip, he criticized the government for allowing Israeli athletes to compete in the Youth Olympic Games currently underway in the West African nation.
The current games, which began on October 31 and are scheduled to conclude on November 13, feature nearly 2,700 athletes from around the world. This marks the first time an Olympic event of any kind has been hosted on the African continent. Eleven Israeli competitors are taking part in eight different disciplines, including boxing, athletics, judo, artistic gymnastics, fencing, and archery.
Amidou Sidibe, coordinator for the civil society group Club Intermediaire, stated that Diallo’s comments were misinterpreted. Diallo told followers on TikTok that Israeli citizens would never find peace in Senegal. Sidibe noted that the phrase is not dangerous in the Wolof language, yet authorities treated it as a call for violence. Police searched Diallo’s residence but did not find any dangerous items.
The National Alliance for the Palestinian Cause issued a statement on November 2 expressing deep concern over the detention. The group maintained that freedom of expression is a fundamental right in any democratic society. They argued that peacefully expressing a political conviction or activist commitment cannot, in itself, justify deprivation of liberty.
Israeli athletes faced boos during the opening parade of the games. Civil society groups are now calling for Diallo’s release. The detention has raised questions about the limits of free speech during a major international sporting event hosted in a country with strong historical ties to the Palestinian cause.
