Jacob Morley, a 28-year-old man serving a life sentence in Tennessee, was back in custody on Tuesday. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed his recapture after a nine-day search that spanned multiple states. His arrest concludes a period of uncertainty for the public and law enforcement agencies tracking his movements.
Missouri State Highway Patrol officials reported that Morley was taken into custody around 11:30 a.m. local time near Norbone. This small city sits approximately one hour from Kansas City. The arrest resulted from a joint operation where Missouri officers acted on specific intelligence provided by their Tennessee counterparts. That intelligence relied on footage from Flock cameras, which suggested Morley was traveling through the state.
Morley originally escaped from the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee. Officers found his cell empty at approximately 11:30 p.m. on October 25. Security video showed him slipping through a fence on the prison property while wearing his uniform. Two days later, on October 27, additional footage captured him stealing a white 2008 Ford F-350 truck from Lake County. The vehicle, which carried Tennessee plates and a logo for Lindamood Planting Company, was found in Marion, Illinois, about 150 miles north of the prison on the day of the theft.
Authorities had offered a combined reward of up to $17,500 for information leading to his capture. The Tennessee governor's office and U.S. Marshals joined the state bureau in backing the payout. Despite these efforts, Morley's exact location remained unknown until the truck was recovered in Illinois.
Morley was convicted of the 2022 murder of his former coworker, Cody Birchfield. Birchfield's body was discovered in a box under Morley's home in Carter County, Tennessee, after a several-week search. The 28-year-old also faced convictions for aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, vandalism, and evading arrest during his initial flight in 2022. That earlier escape ended in North Carolina.
The Northwest Correctional Complex houses 1,776 inmates ranging from minimum to maximum security levels. The facility has faced scrutiny in recent years due to violent incidents involving inmates and staff. In July, a grand jury issued dozens of indictments related to the murders of five inmates and assaults on staff. Members of the Tennessee Inmate Disciplinary Oversight Board have suggested that leadership problems at the facility may have contributed to these recurring issues.
Investigators have stated they will release more details about the specific mechanics of the escape as they become available. For now, the primary established fact is that Morley breached the prison fence to gain his freedom. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation thanked the public for their tips and law enforcement partners for their efforts in concluding the search.
