The Dallas Cowboys matched the franchise record for the largest blown fourth-quarter lead, falling 33-30 in overtime to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

The defeat in Frisco, Texas, marked the second consecutive loss for the team, which now owns a 3-5 record. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the 14-point deficit erased in the fourth quarter is the largest in team history.

Owner Jerry Jones defended head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who has led the team for a season and a half. Jones stated that many players let the coach down and insisted that criticism aimed at Schottenheimer should include the entire roster.

Quarterback Dak Prescott echoed the sentiment, arguing that blaming one individual is weak. The 11th-year starter noted that all 11 players on the field and the support staff share responsibility for the result.

The loss extended a trend of inconsistency. Dallas has lost twice to backup quarterbacks this season. The Cardinals victory followed a previous home loss to undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels of Tampa Bay, who made his second career start in that game.

The Cowboys have held a winning record after only one of the 25 weeks under Schottenheimer. The sole winning streak of the tenure was a three-game run in November of last year.

Defensive struggles played a central role in the collapse. Rookie running back Tyler Allgeier scored on a 63-yard run, and Arizona followed with a 52-yard touchdown on the next play. Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew threw three fourth-quarter touchdowns, including one that capped an 80-yard drive in 63 seconds.

The Cardinals avoided a regulation loss only because kicker Chad Ryland missed a point-after-the-extra-point attempt with six seconds remaining. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, who forced one of two fumbles for Dallas, said the defense must determine what went wrong because the performance cannot be repeated.

On the offensive side, wide receiver George Pickens failed to match his 2025 numbers. He left the field early to watch the winning field goal from a club section. The offensive line allowed four sacks and averaged 2.4 yards per carry, both season worsts, a sharp drop from a week when they rushed for a season-high 204 yards.

Middle linebacker Shemar James Sr. played all but three snaps and recorded his first career interception, solidifying his role as the defense's primary communicator. Injuries affected the secondary, as rookie safety Caleb Downs left with a concussion and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. managed an ankle issue. Tight end Jake Ferguson also exited with an ankle injury. The team plays the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, ending a home record of 191-0 when leading by at least 14 points in the fourth quarter since 1991.
