Third Carrier Departs as 21 Million Vote and Beef Hits $6.79
Military buildups and rising grocery costs coincide with a surge in early ballots ahead of the November 3 midterms.

Nearly 21 million Americans have already cast ballots for the upcoming midterm elections, a figure reported by the University of Florida's Election Lab. This total represents a daily increase of approximately 2 million votes in recent days. The surge in early participation occurs while the United States deploys additional military assets to the Middle East and grocery prices fluctuate due to global economic pressures.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the third aircraft carrier to move to the region. A person briefed on U.S. and Israeli war planning told NPR that the two nations are preparing for a potential attack on Iran after the November 3 elections. President Donald Trump is expected to weigh military options after Election Day to avoid spiking oil prices before voters decide on their ballots. Hegseth recently visited Israel to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, signaling a coordinated approach between the two governments.
Iranian officials state they are prepared for both diplomatic negotiations and military conflict. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted that Tehran is demanding formal control of the Strait of Hormuz and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the area. U.S. and Israeli planners indicate they possess the capability to inflict heavy damage, yet Iran shows no signs of making major concessions in the interim.
In California, a federal judge has restricted pre-election field operations by the Department of Homeland Security. The agency stated these efforts aim to identify noncitizens who allegedly voted illegally in nine states. Meanwhile, a federal magistrate judge ruled that Trump must sit for a deposition in his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC. The judge ordered Trump to comply with court rules or face sanctions. Trump previously canceled a deposition citing matters of national importance and proposed January for the session.
The BBC lawsuit centers on a Panorama broadcast from late October 2024 that allegedly edited Trump's January 6 speech to make it appear he incited a violent siege of Congress. BBC attorneys argue that more than 200 defendants in related cases said the speech motivated them. The network is also seeking details on how Trump has profited since returning to the White House to gauge the extent of any financial damage.
Grocery costs remain a focal point for voters. Ground beef reached $6.79 per pound last month, an 85% increase over the past decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Eggs fell to $2.27 per dozen after hitting a record $6.23 in March 2025. Butter averaged $3.96 in September, a 17.3% decrease from the previous year due to oversupply. Coffee prices remain 44% higher than two years ago, despite the removal of tariffs on the commodity.
Election officials note that Democrats are voting early at higher rates than Republicans, who traditionally turn out on Election Day. Unaffiliated voters are also participating in the early process. The data suggest a shift in voting patterns compared to the previous midterm cycle, although analysts caution against using early figures as a definitive forecast for final results.
