Ukraine’s average shoot-down rate for Russian Geran-4 jet-powered drones has reached nearly 60% over the past three months, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. During specific attacks, the military noted that interception rates for these jet-powered UAVs can spike to 80%.

The General Staff identified tactical aviation as a primary factor in this performance. F-16, Mirage, and MiG-29 aircraft are currently destroying a large portion of the incoming jet-powered UAVs. However, the military stated that strengthening short-range air defence, or SHORAD, remains a priority due to a shortage of surface-to-air guided missiles.

SHORAD capabilities now include anti-aircraft gun systems such as Gepard and Shilka, as well as Skynex, Skyranger, and Terrahawk Paladin systems. The defense forces also employ interceptor drones and mobile fire groups. These mobile units are equipped with machine guns and man-portable air defence systems, or MANPADS. The General Staff reported that soldiers using MANPADS are successfully shooting down enemy jet-powered drones.

Efforts to lower the cost of countering these air threats are ongoing. New interceptor models are currently in testing. Some of these prototypes have already shot down several dozen Russian jet-powered Gerans. Previously, Ukraine reported that Russia began using a Geran-5 modification designated as the K5-K.

Two domestic Ukrainian teams are preparing locally developed surface-to-air missiles for combat deployment against these drones. In addition to these upcoming systems, Ukraine is already operating seven interceptor types that have successfully engaged Russian jet-powered aircraft.
