North Oconee's 40-game winning streak in region play ended last week when Jefferson won 27-17. The result gave the Dragons their fifth consecutive region championship under head coach Travis Noland.

The two teams had won 57 of their last 58 region matchups combined going into the contest. Jefferson is currently ranked No. 6 in Class 5A. The team will sit out this week before the state playoffs begin.

Noland said his players approached the game with a simple goal. "We just tried to be the best Jefferson team that we could be," he said. He noted that his squad had won many region titles before and that the players performed at a high level against a familiar opponent.

Addressing the upcoming playoff bracket, Noland discussed the uncertainty of the process. "I don't know," he said regarding the specific matchups. He emphasized that winning is the primary objective, regardless of the path forward.

When asked about the strategy for the season, the coach focused on adaptability. "We can be," he said, referring to the team's readiness. He stated that the group works to handle any situation that arises during the season.

The interview with Noland was conducted by Caitlyn Stroh-Page, the senior sports editor for high school sports and college football. Stroh-Page has previously written for Sports Illustrated Kids and The Macon Telegraph. She lives in the Athens area.

Jefferson's victory over North Oconee secures their region title before the state tournament. The Dragons have now won five straight region championships under Noland's leadership.
