Duke defeated Army 84-50 on Monday night in Durham, securing its 27th consecutive season-opening victory.

The Blue Devils, ranked No. 2, began their 19th straight season with a top-10 ranking. They established an early 12-0 lead and scored 50 points in the paint. Army was without a field goal for nearly the first six minutes of the contest. The home team also outscored the Black Knights 22-6 on free throws while Army committed 24 turnovers.

Dame Sarr finished with 16 points for Duke. Freshman Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje recorded 15 points in his collegiate debut. He also secured seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Boumtje Boumtje, 17, is the youngest player in Division I, having been born in May 2009. Patrick Ngongba II added 10 points for the Blue Devils.

Kevin McCarthy scored 17 points for Army. The Black Knights mounted a 12-0 run after Duke’s 11-0 spurt to begin the second half pushed the lead to 44-18. Army’s offensive surge relied on four 3-point baskets. Duke, which shot 0 of 9 from beyond the arc in the first half, saw four players connect from distance. This extended the nation’s longest streak with at least one 3-pointer made to 1,303 games. The streak began almost 37 years ago.
