Ernie Johnson announced on Wednesday that he will leave his hosting role on "Inside the NBA" when the current season concludes. The decision marks the end of his thirty-six year run with the program, which he has led since 1990.
Johnson, who is 70 years old, posted the news on social media. He described the move as a necessary pause rather than a full retirement. "It's just time," he wrote in his initial announcement. He clarified that he intends to continue working in the industry.
The Sports Broadcasting Hall of Famer noted that his future schedule will include coverage of the NCAA men's basketball tournament for CBS and Turner Sports. He characterized the departure from the NBA show as a new phase in his career. "This is by no means the end. It's just a turning of the page," Johnson said.
Although Johnson acknowledged dealing with heart issues in recent years, he stated that his health is not the primary driver for his decision. He explained that his main motivation is to reduce his workload. "I just want to slow down a bit," he added in the social media post.
Johnson has been with Turner Sports since joining the company in 1989. He has won six Sports Emmy Awards during his tenure. In his message to viewers, he thanked the production crews at TNT Sports and ESPN for their long-term support. "I just want to say thanks to you. Thanks for your loyalty, for your love, for your support. And on this day, for your understanding," Johnson said.
The broadcaster expressed gratitude for the chapters written with the show over the decades. He said he will forever cherish the experience. His final appearance as host will occur before the end of the season.
