Tampa Bay Rays fans arrived at Tropicana Field expecting a path back to the World Series, but an eight-run fifth inning ended that hope. The Milwaukee Brewers now hold a 3-0 series lead, placing the Rays one loss away from elimination.
Jeff Ballenger, a U.S. Coast Guard member based in Alaska, traveled from his childhood home in Lakeland to watch the game. He said the team needs more financial investment to compete, suggesting an additional $50 million in payroll would help. Ballenger also called for more playing time for young prospects.
“As a Rays fan, this sucks,” Ballenger said. “We definitely need more investment in the team. We need hitting. We need hitting.”
Local college players expressed similar doubts. Ethan Frame of the University of Tampa baseball team said the team is running out of time. “I feel like we’re a little bit out of it,” Frame said. His teammate Evan Peerless acknowledged the difficulty but kept a comeback in mind. “I mean, it’s definitely going to be really hard,” Peerless said. “I think if there’s any team that can do it, it’s definitely the Rays.”
Ballenger maintains faith in manager Kevin Cash, envisioning a four-game winning streak to secure the championship. “Maybe we'll go on a 4-0 streak and we'll shock the world,” he said. The Rays will attempt to stay alive in Game 4 on Tuesday night at Tropicana Field.
